KUALA LUMPUR: Barring unforeseen circumstances, incumbent Datuk G. Palanivel is a certainty to retain the deputy president’s post in the MIC party polls on Saturday.

The 60-year-old former Hulu Selangor MP, who has the endorsement of party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, prides himself as a pious and people’s man who will walk the extra mile for the community.

“I have worked very hard, not just for this campaign, but throughout my years in the party.

“The grassroots leaders have no doubt about who walks the talk and which candidate is really interested in the welfare of Indians,” he said in an interview.

His election campaign, he said, has been straight-forward and open because of his track record as a capable and performance-oriented leader.

“I have no fight and don’t indulge in washing dirty linen in public, or using vested media.

“I don’t indulge in smear campaigns,” he added.

Palanivel said his vision for Malaysian Indians was that they must acquire quality education and skills, increase capital accumulation, adopt a planned life at all levels and evolve into a disciplined society.

The Government, he added, must also devise special programmes for Indians to uplift the community.

Since becoming deputy president in 2006, Palanivel said he has provided his performance record to all MIC leaders to make them aware of his work.

Specifically, he said two major programmes – Sutera Sari and Cyber Start – were extensively conducted to mobilise grassroots leaders to interact with government initiatives, and change the lives of Malaysian Indians who needed empowerment and self-esteem.

Palanivel said the MIC needed credible leaders who would inspire confidence and rise above personal agenda and selfish gains.

“We cannot take a risk with people who have not given us an example in this direction,” he said, adding that campaigns should be about performance, character, track record, leadership and role-model behaviour.

“As far as I am concerned, my campaign is by rules that I have established in accordance with a fair challenge.

“And may the best man win,” he said.
