A scanner that ditches the power brick

What say you on the issue below?

PETALING JAYA: Here’s one way to reduce the cable mess on your desktop: Canon’s new compact and lightweight LiDE 700F scanner only needs a USB port for power.

According to Canon, the scanner uses a high-brightness LED light source based on the LED Indirect Exposure (LiDE) technology, which consumes a mere 2.5 watts of power provided by the USB port.

For users, this means less cable clutter as there is no need for a bulky power adaptor to operate the device.

For added convenience, the LiDE 700F can be placed in three different positions — horizontal, vertical and upright. It also has a 180° hinged-cover that allows thick books to be scanned with ease, Canon said.

The scanner has a maximum optical resolution of up to 9,600 x 9,600dpi (dots per inch) for film scanning and up to 4,800 x 4,800dpi for document and photos.

A compact film adaptor unit is included in the package to help users scan film strips.

The device is able to scan a frame from a 35mm filmstrip in 31secs while an A4 colour document can be completed in just 12secs, Canon said.

The inclusion of four “EZ Buttons” enables users to quickly copy, scan, e-mail or create a PDF file with just one push of a button.

Its “Auto Scan Mode” feature recognises the type of media or document during the scan operation and is able to take the appropriate action automatically.

The 700F can also perform auto-cropping and document orientation correction before saving the document in different categories — all without any user intervention.

The scanner comes bundled with Canon’s MP Navigator EX file management software. It retails at RM589.
