Najib: Govt keeps faith with MACC

What say you on the issue below?

PUTRAJAYA: The government still has faith and confidence in the credibility of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

"We should not point fingers at MACC just because of one case relating to the late Teoh Beng Hock. I am very sure that even the MACC does not want any tragedy to take place within its compound as this will only lead to many queries against the agency.

"We should not be too quick to blame the MACC or turn it into an institution that harps on politics based on sentiments.

"All this will only lead to negative repercussions for an important institution we put our hope on to combat graft practices," Najib added.

Teoh, 30, a political aide to a Selangor executive councillor, was found dead on July 16, just hours after he was questioned by the MACC in a graft investigation allegedly involving several Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen.

He was said to have fallen to his death from the 14th floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam where he had been questioned.

MACC insisted that he was questioned and allowed to go home but Pakatan Rakyat is crying foul.

Najib said the government would remain transparent in the case. "We have started an inquest (into Teoh's death) and a Royal Commission will be formed to look into MACC's processes and procedures.

"If, at all, there are shortcomings or anything relating to civil liberties and so on, the government will carry out remedial measures.

"We have been transparent in all matters and we hope our openness will make the people realise and understand that the government has no intention to cover up whatever weaknesses."
