ALOR SETAR: The Pakatan government in Kedah has requested Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah to strip executive councillor Mohd Radzhi of his post.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak has handed a letter to the Sultan urging that Mohd Radzhi be removed as a councillor.
“I believe Tuanku Sultan will make a decision within several days. I hope Tuanku will consider our request because Mohd Radzhi is no longer representing Pakatan Rakyat,” he told newsmen yesterday.
Lunas assemblyman Mohd Radzhi can still hold his exco post until a decision is made by the Sultan.
Azizan said Mohd Radzhi would continue in his duties including attending the exco meeting pending the Sultan’s decision.
On Sunday, Mohd Radzhi announced he was quitting PKR to become an independent member of the Kedah legislative assembly.
The Tourism, Community Development and Human Resources Committee chairman had said he would retain his exco post as the appointment was made by the Sultan.
Umno, meanwhile, will talk to Mohd Radzhi about the possibility of him joining the party.
Umno Youth executive committee member Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said Mohd Radzhi seems to share Umno’s feelings on how Kedah should be run.
“It will be good if he becomes a Barisan Nasional assemblyman. But, we do not have anything to do with his decision to quit,” he told The Star in Bukit Mertajam yesterday.
Commenting on PAS vice-chairman Datuk Mahfuz Omar’s call for Mohd Radzhi to resign as the Lunas representative as the people wanted a PKR assemblyman, Mukhriz said there was no law that necessitated that.
Earlier, Mahfuz said Mohd Radzhi’s resignation would not have any impact in the Permatang Pasir by-election.
Mahfuz, who is the by-election director, said he was happy that Mohd Radzhi had quit from the coalition.
“He is a liability to Pakatan Rakyat. His departure is part of a cleaning process in the coalition,” he said.
Mahfuz claimed Mohd Radzhi’s resignation was part of a grand design by certain quarters to cause the downfall of the Pakatan Kedah state government.
