TAIPING: A total of 42 tonnes of sugar were confiscated from a rice godown at the Tupai light industrial area, the largest seizure in the country yet.
The state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry enforcement division said the seizure of the sugar, worth RM58,800, also landed a refinery in Perlis in hot soup.
It was not supposed to supply the consignment to the rice godown, which did not have the wholesale licence to trade in the commodity.
State Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs chief enforcement officer Mohd Shahar Osman said his counterpart in Perlis had been informed of the seizure and would investigate the matter.
He said the rice godown operator and sugar refinery were being investigated. The sugar will be sold to the ministry’s appointed wholesellers in the state, he told reporters at the scene Thursday.
Those with information on hoarding and increased prices of control items could call 1-800-886-800.
