BUTTERWORTH: A total of 1,300 metric tonnes of sugar will be sent to Kedah by the end of the week to overcome the sugar shortage there.
The amount is equivalent to 1.3 million 1kg packs.
Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob said two sugar processing factories in Penang and Perlis have been asked to send 1,200 and 100 metric tones of sugar respectively to Kedah.
A few factories he inspected had also agreed to add another 20,000 metric tonnes, especially during the Hari Raya period, he said after visiting Malayan Sugar Manufacturing Co Bhd in Prai here yesterday. The company accounts for 50% of the country’s sugar supply.
Ismail Sabri said the four major sugar-processing companies in the country have, at any given time, ready stock of 50,000 tonnes of unprocessed sugar.
He advised people to immediately stop the panic buying of sugar.
