Ganesan dismisses Pakatan complaint

What say you on the issue below?

IPOH: Perak Speaker Datuk R. Ganesan has brushed aside claims by Pakatan Rakyat that he had infringed Article 36A of the Perak Constitution by failing to give up his job as a lawyer within three months of his appointment.

He said he had stopped practising as a lawyer on Aug 6 and informed the Bar Council by a letter which was faxed on Aug 13. The letter was received by the Bar Council on Aug 17, he added.

"The act of informing the Bar Council is a mere formality. As far as I am concerned, the Bar Council has acknowledged the fact that I ceased to be a lawyer on Aug 6," he said yesterday.

Ganesan said this when he was asked to comment on claims by Pakatan that he only filed a notice of cessation of practice as a lawyer on Aug 17, 10 days after the expiry of the statutory deadline for him to do so,

He had since denied this, saying he had stopped practising since his appointment during the May 7 state assembly meeting.

Article 36A of the Perak Constitution states that a member who is elected to be the speaker shall be disqualified from holding office if after three months of his election to such office or at any time thereafter he is or becomes a member of any board of directors or board of management, or an officer or employee, or engages in the affairs or business, of any organisation or body.

Ganesan took a swipe at Pakatan for trying to create non-existent issues.

"They will do anything to be in the limelight.

"The truth is, they are worried the state administration under the leadership of Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir is running smoothly without a hitch."
