Workplace nurseries likely to get double tax exemptions

ROMPIN: Employers who set up nurseries in their companies or factories are likely to receive double tax exemption if a proposal from the Human Resources Ministry gets the go ahead.

Deputy Minister Datuk Maznah Mazlan said the move would encourage the private sector to set up such centres.

She said this could also help reduce the country’s dependence on foreign maids, adding that working mothers would find it convenient to continue in their jobs as their children would be well taken care of.

“There are mothers who are working really hard to earn more because they have to pay for babysitting and the services of foreign maids.

“However, if their children are taken care of by the nurseries, they will be brought up in a quality environment,” she said yesterday.

Maznah said ideally, employers should also partly subsidise the costs of nurseries for their staff.

She said the Government was also looking into the proposal to get maids from Laos, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and India.
