PLUS to screen off accident spots to ease traffic flow

What say you on the issue below?

PETALING JAYA: Vehicles involved in minor accidents on the highways will be covered by screens to prevent passing motorists from slowing down to look, thus creating traffic congestion.

Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said that PLUS Expressways, the concessionaire for the North-South Express-way, Elite Highway, North Klang Valley Expressway and Second Link, would adopt this measure.

“Sometimes it is just a small knock on the bumper, but it causes a massive jam because other motorists slow down to have a look.

“Some want to take down the (car registration ) number to buy 4D (lottery), others are busybodies who want to check out the condition of the driver or severity of the crash,” he said.

With the screens, Shaziman said motorists would would not be able to see the vehicles involved in collisions.

“PLUS will do this for accidents that do not need the police (to be on site), meaning minor accidents. They will move the cars involved to the side and cover them up to allow traffic to continue flowing smoothly,” he said.

When pointed out that it was usually tow truck operators who created a “scene” by congregating at the accident site, Shaziman advised those involved in accidents to wait for the PLUS patrol team.

“PLUS says it takes 20 minutes for their people to arrive. They have GPS (Global Positioning System) and can get there very fast.”

Shaziman was speaking to reporters after visiting the PLUS traffic monitoring centre, which cost RM54mil, in Subang Jaya.

The centre monitors almost 1,000km of highways under the management of PLUS, with more than 1,600 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras placed at strategic locations.

A team monitors traffic movement from the centre via 40 screens which are 50-inch (127cm) wide.
