MALAYSIA Nanban expressed hope that lecturers at Universiti Malaya’s Indian Studies Department would set aside their differences and work towards helping their students to excel in their studies.

In its editorial, it said the department should also strive towards ensuring that the university achieved a higher position in world rankings.

The paper, in commenting on the move to maintain the department’s name, quoted MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu as saying that any move to change its name would cause serious repercussions.

Samy Vellu had said that the department was created with money collected from Indian estate workers in the early 1950s under a “Save Tamil Fund,” and was a source of pride for the Indian community.

The department, he said, had a rich tradition for the Indians.

> Tamil Nesan reported Federal Territories Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin as saying that the low-cost houses under the People’s Housing Programme (PPR) would go on sale from Oct 10.

He said that low-income earners living in town areas would have the opportunity to own houses, adding that families currently renting low-cost homes would have the chance to buy their respective units.
