Tee Keat accepts resolutions

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat has decided to accept the five resolutions submitted by his opponent’s supporters for the sake of party unity.

“As the party president, I do not want to see the party further divided. It is my wish that MCA members close ranks as swiftly as possible and continue with its reform agenda in the run-up to the 13th general election.

“I believe that at the end of the day, the MCA delegates’ maturity and wisdom will prevail, and that they will put MCA’s interest above all else,” Ong said when commenting on the decision of a meeting chaired by party secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng between his representatives and supporters of sacked deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek here yesterday.

In his blog www.ongteekeat.net, the MCA chief related how he came to the decision on the five resolutions.

“My appointed representatives met with representatives of the EGM requisitionists to work out the details on how to hold a ‘merged EGM’.

“Mid-way through the negotiations, my representative called me to say that discussions had hit an impasse. I was advised that this involved significant technical and legal issues.

“However, in view of the wishes of the members, I do not want to dwell too much on the legal and technical aspects, as it is imperative that only one EGM be held as soon as possible so that the party can move forward. I, therefore, instructed my representatives to accept the other side’s five resolutions,” Ong added.

He also pointed out that the other side’s representatives had submitted their requisition for an EGM on Friday, which was the same day the presidential council met and decided to have only one EGM.

Earlier yesterday, Ong held a closed-door meeting with about 100 Perlis MCA leaders and delegates for over two hours to discuss the latest political developments in the party.

Ong arrived at about 3.50pm and was welcomed by Wanita MCA chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, who is also the Perlis MCA liaison committee chairman.

Her deputy Oui Ah Lan, together with Kedah MCA liaison chairman Lim Lye Huat, were also present.

However, all the leaders and delegates kept mum on what transpired at the meeting.
