PETALING JAYA: Malaysian and Indonesian students’ associations have proposed several initiatives to defuse tension between the two countries.

The National Muslim Students’ Association and Indonesian Muslim Students’ Association, in a signed statement, said there should be a more diplomatic approach and emphasis on discussions to resolve issues of mutual interest.

“Be more aware of the value of Islamic brotherhood when facing the numerous issues involving both countries,” said the statement signed by president of the Malaysian association Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz and his Indonesian counterpart Nashrullah Al-Ghifary.

Among the other proposals were to keep away from emotionally-driven action; encouraging students from both countries to foster mutual understanding in culture, idealism, economy, society and security; and raising a generation of Malaysian and Indonesian students to be unifying agents of society if future conflicts flare up.
