Security boost for low-cost areas

KOTA KINABALU: The National Housing Department will adopt a policy to allow one house in each low-cost housing project to be converted into a police station.

Such a move to provide police presence would ensure that residents have a sense of security, Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Lajim Ukin said.

He said the department would be holding discussions to find out the needs of policemen and the feasibility of setting up police stations or beat bases at low-cost housing areas.

Low-cost houses are priced at RM35,000 a unit in the peninsula and RM42,000 in Sabah.

“We hope to start the concept by next year or during the 10th Malaysia Plan period,” he told reporters after presenting Hari Raya cakes to Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Ghani at the Kepayan state police headquarters.

Lajim said the move to set up police stations or beat bases in housing areas was due to many complaints of petty crimes in those areas.

“Sometimes, irresponsible residents or visitors park their cars indiscriminately and this has led to fights at the housing areas,” he said.
