KUCHING: Sarawak plans to develop a new township in Semariang when a new coastal road along the area is completed.

State Housing Minister Datuk Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg said the road, expected to be ready by the end of the year, would open up an area of about 2,000ha which could accommodate some 45,000 houses and commercial premises.

“The area to be opened up with the new road has potential to be developed into a new urban centre.

“The development will be mixed, comprising both affordable and high-end housing to cater to different sectors of society,” he told reporters after handing over occupation permits to 17 house owners of the new Taman Daya Riang housing project yesterday.

He said the proposed township would be developed by the state’s Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and the private sector, and would incorporate contemporary and environmentally-friendly designs.

“We’re also thinking of having kiosks or corner shops within the township to give residents the convenience of doing their shopping nearby instead of having to drive to a supermarket further away,” he added.

On Taman Daya Riang, Abang Johari said it was the first high-end project to be developed by the state-owned Daya Perumahan Sdn Bhd.He said Daya Perumahan would no longer be only involved in low-cost housing projects but was now embarking on high-end projects to enable it to compete with the private sector.

“Daya Perumahan’s approach will be to develop small projects of high quality that will give satisfaction to customers,” he said.
