Safety training for village girls against sex predators

PETALING JAYA: The Sarawak Women for Women Society will be launching the second phase of its Empowering Rural Girls programme next month.

The participants of the programme would be able to discuss how to help girls who have experienced “sexually exploitative situations.”

Community leaders keen to help - youths, teachers, health workers, village health promoters and members of women’s groups working in the outlying villages - will be involved in the programme.

The programme will involve, among other things, personal safety sessions with students in Long Lama, Long Pelutan and Long Bedian.

The training will also cover the Long San and Suai areas.

The society said in a press statement yesterday that the participants would help develop support systems by linking relevant government and non-government agencies.

They would also look at what could be done to make the environment safer.

The programme is being sponsored by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and has the full cooperation of the Sarawak Women’s Bureau and the Departments of Education and Health.

The first phase of the programme was held last July.

The third phase of the programme, to consist of reviewing the response at community level and providing additional training, will be held in the future.
