MCA council decides on one EGM based on majority wish

KUALA LUMPUR: Only one extraordinary general meeting (EGM) will be convened, the MCA presidential council has unanimously decided.

Party secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng said the consensus was reached with the aim of not causing inconvenience to the central delegates.

He said the presidential council fully appreciated and understood the wishes of the majority of the party members to convene one EGM as they felt that holding two EGMs would cause great inconvenience and unnecessary confusion among the delegates and members.

On Aug 31, party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat invoked Article 30.1 of the party constitution to call for an EGM with the aim of resolving party issues while sacked deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek’s camp was still collecting signatures to call for one of their own.

Wong also announced that an EGM coordinating committee will be set up to liaise with the two factions.

Wong said the committee members would comprise himself, his deputy Datuk Loke Yuen Yow, organising secretary Yoo Wei How and deputy organising secretary Gan Hong Su and MCA headquarters chief administrative director Lim Chin Hai.

“We will also invite legal bureau chief Datuk Leong Tang Chong to be included in the committee,” he told reporters after receiving EGM requisition forms from Dr Chua’s camp at Wisma MCA here yesterday.

He said all signatures handed by Dr Chua’s camp would be verified as soon as possible.

“I will call for a meeting for representatives from both factions to meet soonest possible,” he said.
