Chua’s camp officially requests EGM

What say you on the issue below?

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA central committee members Datuk Seri Tan Chai Ho, Datuk Chong Itt Chew and Loh Seng Kok submitted 921 signed requisition forms to hold an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) of the party.

The requisition included five resolutions:

> That the members of the general assembly have no confidence in the leadership of president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.

> That the presidential council’s decision on Aug 26 in accepting the recommendation of the disciplinary board and the subsequent decision of the central committee (if any) to expel or suspend Datuk Seri DrChua Soi Lek is annulled.

> Dr Chua be rightfully restored as deputy president of MCA.

> Appointment made by the central committee, including that of deputy president of MCA, be revoked.

> Any disciplinary action taken against any or all the requisitionists by the disciplinary board, the central committee or the presidential council, be dismissed.

It listed the reasons for calling for an EGM as:

> The president has failed to present a clear direction for the party and failed to undertake a reformation of the party.

> The president has failed to unite the party and has failed to lead and manage the affairs of MCA effectively.

> The president has failed to present the image of a united MCA and also failed to respect the wishes of central delegates and MCA grassroots leaders as reflected in the appointment of office-bearers.

> Dr Chua resigned from all party and government posts so that the party’s image was not affected, but was subsequently elected as deputy president in the party election of 2008. The wishes and decision of central delegates ought to be accorded and respected.

> Requisitions are allowed under Article 30.3 and 31 of the party constitution. Hence, no disciplinary action or other punitive action should be taken against any or all of the requisitionists by the disciplinary board, the central committee or the presidential council.

The three arrived at Wisma MCA at 4.30pm yesterday and met with secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng after 5pm.

Wong was in the presidential council meeting with other MCA leaders since 11am.

Tan said during a press conference that he had the signatures of 50% of the 2,402 central delegates but submitted only 921.

Under the party constitution, one third of central delegates are required to request for an EGM.

Earlier, Dr Chua held a press conference in Petaling Jaya and said he had the support of more than 1,200 central delegates.

The former health minister said he only wanted to retire as an MCA member, and had never said he wanted to be party president, senator or minister. On the date of the EGM, Dr Chua said he would leave it to Tan.

“(Tan) Chai Ho has the political maturity and wisdom to do the job. As a Buddhist, he told me he would move ahead once he finds the right date, time and number of central delegates.”

On talk that he did not have the numbers, he said his critics could follow him to a temple and chop off a cockerel’s head.

On rumours that he had formed a new party called Parti Cintai Malaysia (PCM), Dr Chua said it was not true.
