Manong folks snap up two tonnes of sugar

What say you on the issue below?

KUALA KANGSAR: People from Manong, a remote town located about 20km from here, snapped up close to two tonnes of sugar in under three hours.

To ensure his constituents did not have to travel far to get their supply, state executive councillor Datuk Ramly Zahari and the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Department made special arrangements with a wholesaler to sell sugar at the Manong weekly market yesterday morning.

“Manong is rather remote with only a few grocery shops available.

“As more sugar is needed to make kuih and drinks during this festive period, we thought it would be easier to bring sugar to them,” said Ramly, who took on the role of “salesman” to wholesaler Ng Choon Sing.

Officers from the department also lent a hand by stuffing 1kg of sugar into plastic bags for buyers.

Ng, from Kuala Kangsar, said almost all the sugar was sold out by 11am.

“We started at 8.30am and business was brisk,” he said.

Hussein Ahmad Baki, 83, who bought 4kg of sugar, said although stock was available in the town, it was limited.

“This sugar is for my wife to make kuih bahulu, dodol and wajik,” he said.

Mokhtar Abdul Rahman, 68, from nearby Parit, said it was a good thing he visited the market yesterday and managed to stock up on sugar for the festive season.
