KELAB Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah (KGSAAS) will continue to host the Merdeka Midnite Golf challenge.

KGSAAS executive director Gary Ng made the commitment at the prize-giving ceremony of the 16th edition of the championship held in conjunction with the Merdeka Day.

Ng thanked the 144 participants for taking part in the unique championship despite it being the fasting month.

“We have to thank the sponsors for their continued support of the event. We will continue hosting this event every year as a mark of respect to our country,” he said.

The championship was graced by former Asean secretary-general Tan Sri Ajit Singh as well as the chairman of NamFatt Corporation Bhd and the president, vice-president and directors of the corporation.

Lim Boon Kiat emerged the winner of the Members’ category by garnering 44 Stableford points – two points more than second- placed Shahrom Jaffril. Alex Chong was third with 39 points.

“I played well mainly because I did not miss the fairways and my approach shots were good. I also had a good feel of the putter,” Lim said.

In the Guests category, Roslan Jaafar pipped Tai Shu Fing on countback to become champion. Both golfers return with identical 43 points. Razman Md Alatar was third with 42 points.

Brandon Low won the Invitees category after mustering 42 points. Zubir Idrus (40) and Shahruddin Saad (38) took second and third spots, respectively.

The Merdeka Midnite Golf Challenge is the only one of its kind in the world where the competition tees off at midnight. For its uniqueness, the event found its way into the Malaysia Book of Records when the 10th edition was held in 2003.
