FOR Selayang Municipal Council president Datuk Zainal Abidin Azim, the enjoyment of Ramadan is to share with his family grilled fish that he catches himself.
The avid angler loves the stingray, which he says in not too bony compared with other fishes.
However, with such a busy schedule, Zainal Abidin is only able to break fast with his family mostly on weekends since he is invited to attend many functions during Ramadan.
My choice: Zainal Abidin turning the stingray being grilled at one of the stalls at the Ramadan bazaar in Taman Samudera. Zainal Abidin loves grilling the fish at his home in Selayang or when he does not have the time for it, he will send the fish to his favourite stall in Bandar Baru Selayang to have it cooked.
Zainal said he ocassionally goes river-fishing to catch Ikan Kelah, Ikan Keli or Ikan Sebarau or goes to sea to catch Ikan Kerapu, Ikan Jenahak or Ikan Bawal Cermin.
“Then, I would take it to my favourite stall and they would cook it for me. It is fresher and tastier.
Stingray grilled is Zainal’s favourite throughout the year and it is one of the most common dishes to be found on his dining table.
But Zainal Abidin said he could settle for Ikan Terubuk if the stingray was not available at the Ramadan bazaar.
Clean stall: Zainal Abidin (second from left) looking at a food operator cooking murtabak. Zainal also said he liked traditional Malay kuih like tapioca-based Tepung Talam Ubi and Bingka Ubi to break fast with.
As he loves spicy food, Zainal Abidin also loves Masak Lemak Cili Api and Masak Lemak Tempoyak.
The adventurous Zainal Abidin owns a couple of four-wheel drives and two All Terrain Vehicles (ATV). He takes part in many four-wheel drive adventure races throughout the year.
He also plays golf from time to time.
“My passion is going for a four-wheel drive adventure in the jungle as I can enjoy nature. It just gives me peace,’’ he said.
