PETALING JAYA: In light of the racial tension simmering lately, a group of people have declared an initiative to unite Malaysians of all races.

Calling themselves Anak Bangsa Malaysia, the group aspires to make Malaysia a nation of a single people.

Spokesman Haris Ibrahim said the political system was not focused on forging a national identity or consciousness resulting in divisive forces.

“It’s all about us coming together and tearing down the racial divide. We belong in this home called Malaysia. If we can’t do this for ourselves, then it’s for the next generation,” he said at the launch of the initiative in Damansara Heights yesterday.

The group launched a charter called Anak Bangsa Malaysia Charter, pledging their commitment to adopt a national mindset “to think and act first and foremost as Malaysian” in realising the One People, One Nation aspiration.

Among the activities planned is a voter registration exercise and a project on anti-Internal Security Act.

“We plan to have forums in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Johor, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak to disseminate the message,” he said.
