THE Star photographer Chan Boon Kai wins the second prize in the Best News Photography award at Han Chiang College’s Golden Achievement Awards (GAA).

Chan, 29, submitted the picture he took during the dragon boat tra-gedy involving five Chung Ling High School students and a teacher in January last year when he was still attached to Sin Chew Daily.

“Covering the tragedy was one of the most unforgettable and emotionally charged assignments in my seven years as a photographer,” he told reporters.

Chan took home RM3,000, a trophy and certificate.

The first prize went to Loh Hoay Hoon, 28, of Kwong Wah Yit Poh.

The Best News Commentary award went to Julio Lee, 32, of Sin Chew Daily.

The function was graced by Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim on behalf of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

China Press former editor Wong Siew Hoon, 90, took the Media Lifetime Achievement Award.

“I’m touched by the recognition. I have been in the press industry for more than 60 years,” said the frail but spirited Wong, who received RM10,000, a trophy and certificate.

A total of five awards were given to the Chinese media while the college students vied for 25 awards.

Najib said the Federal Government gave equal treatment to streams of schools in the country.

In his speech read out by Dr Rais, he assured that both public and private education institutions would receive support and assistance from the government.

Najib quoted the establishment of Foon Yew High School in Johor and Han Chiang College in Penang as examples of the government’s support for Chinese education in the country.

The GAA, which was initiated in 2000, gives recognition to students who achieve outstanding academic performance.

Han Chiang board of directors chairman Tan Sri Tan Kok Ping said that this year the GAA was extended to all Chinese media practitioners in Malaysia under the newly added open category of media awards.

“The awards would also be extended to the media in other languages in the near future,” he said.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who was present, congratulated the college for consistently producing media practitioners.

The night saw various cultural dance and singing shows, including a 1Malaysia band performance by students from Han Chiang College as well as Han Chiang primary and secondary schools.
