VISITORS to the Batu Ferringhi beach can now look forward to a cleaner environment, thanks to the Holiday Inn Resort which has dedicated every second Wednes-day of the month for its ‘Beach Cleaning Project’.
“The project is an initiative that will be carried out by the resort’s staff and guests.
“We constantly encourage and remind our staff to do their part in protecting the environment whenever possible,” said the resort general manager Stella Jacobs.
She expressed hope that the initiative will contribute towards making the state, a preferred holiday destination.
Jacobs was speaking to reporters after the recent launch of the project by state Local Government and Traffic Manage-ment Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow.
Chow praised the hotel for playing a pro-active role in improving the image of Batu Ferringhi.
Nigel Kingston, 44, an electronics engineer from Ireland had mooted the project to the resort.
“Penang is a nice place with fantastic beaches and I want to play my part to keep it clean and pristine,” he said while combing the sand with a rake for rubbish and debris.
Kingston has been visiting Penang every year for the last 12 years.
Australians Sharlane Braislford, 45, and her mother Francis Rainer, 60, also helped out. Rainer described the effort as a good activity and was glad the hotel invited her to join in the clean up.
