Parents urged to provide children with social and religious values

What say you on the issue below?

MUAR: Parents and teachers have been urged not to neglect social and religious needs of their children while pressuring them to excel in their studies.

State Women, Family, Health and Community Development Committee chairman Dr Robia Kosai said too much pressure on their children’s studies could have an adverse effects on their mental health.

She said children should be encouraged to have fun, play with friends, take up sporting activities and also learn religious values while growing up.

“We know many parents and teachers today want children to score good marks in school and pressure them to study hard, and even send them to tuition classes after school.

Well done: Dr Robia (second left) presenting a prize to a kindergarten student who participated in a reading and writing contest organised by the Johor Unity and National Integration Department in Muar.

“This is good but we don’t want the children to be pressured into becoming geniuses and scared if they do not score good marks,” she said before presenting prizes to kindergarten pupils in the “Tunas Permata Perpaduan 1Malaysia” competition on Tuesday.

Dr Robia said some children had committed suicide or ran away from homes when they failed to score good marks in their examination as they were afraid of their parents.

She said parents and teachers should see to that their children enjoyed holistic lessons which incorporate social and religious values.

Dr Robia also urged teachers to be committed and to give their best when teaching in schools so the children did not have to go for tuition classes.

“We know most tuition classes are conducted by the teachers themselves at their homes after school.

“If they can give good tuition lessons to students at the tuition centres, they can also do it in the schools,” Dr Robia said.

It is sad to see children having to spend almost the whole day learning and not having some fun time with their siblings or friends, she added.
