Early Deepavali cheer for 130 poor folk in Bayan Baru

A TOTAL of 130 residents from poor families in Bayan Baru, Penang, were beaming with joy after receiving food items in conjunction with the upcoming Deepavali celebrations.

The residents, comprising the poor, disabled and the elderly, were all smiles as each of them received RM100 worth of food items.

The items included rice and cooking oil.

They were generously contributed by the Bayan Baru MIC division during the event on Saturday.

Division chairman K. Sathiasilan said that it was the division’s initiative for the contributions to be given to needy residents of Bayan Baru as Deepavali was just around the corner.

“It will help to lessen their burden for a more joyous celebration,” he added.

He said this before the presentation of items at the Mahsuri Rukun Te- tangga building at Bangunan Pusat Khidmat Sosial Setempat on Lorong Mahsuri 10.

Penang MIC chief Senator Datuk P.K. Subbaiyah was present to hand over the items to the recipients who included wheelchair-bound and visually-impaired individuals.

Also present were Penang MIC Youth chief J. Dhinagaran and MCA mem- bers.

After the presentation ceremony, everyone was treated to a meal of fried bihun and hot tea as well as sumptuous sweet delicacies such as vade and kesari.
