KUALA LUMPUR: A woman and her three-month-old baby perished in a fire that broke out at their home in Jalan Pudu early yesterday.
It is learnt that Lee Yoke Kun, 28, woke her family up at 1.15am to alert them of the fire.
Her husband Lee Hon Tiao, 29, a fishball noodle seller, when met at Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, said that his wife woke him, his parents and their three-year-old son Park Lean when their house was engulfed in flames.
“She woke us up and screamed at us to leave the house. I grabbed Park Lean while my father Lee Hup Seng, 63, and my mother Wan Fong, 58, took my seven-year-old nephew out of the house.
“We had to crawl out through the thick smoke. Once out, I called out for my wife and my baby but there was no answer.
“My father tried to rush into our burning house to look for them but was stopped by Fire and Rescue personnel who arrived at the scene,” said Hon Tiao.
He said he only realised that Yoke Kun and his baby Yee Lean did not make it to safety after the fire had been put out.
Yoke Kun was found still holding on to her baby in one of the rooms.
It is believed that the woman and her baby were overwhelmed by the smoke.
Hang Tuah Fire and Rescue operation Commander Rohayah Alias said over a dozen houses in the area were destroyed in the fire that was believed to have started from a squatter area a few metres away.
More than 40 personnel from the Hang Tuah, Pudu and Bandar Tun Razak stations rushed to the scene after receiving the distress call.
