BUKIT MERTAJAM: Motorists plying the North-South Express-way were forced to travel an extra 4km to make their way to the Penang Bridge after a tanker turned on its side and blocked the exit to the bridge following an accident.
The tanker carrying a poly ammonium chloride solution was on its way to a factory in Sungai Petani from Juru when the accident occurred at about 4.20am yesterday.
Long way: Workers clearing the mess caused by the tanker accident at the highway Sunday. Driver T. Vijayadas, 38, who only sustained minor bruises, said that it was raining heavily when he lost control of his vehicle at Km139.9 of the expressway.
Fire and Rescue Department Senior Asst Superintendent Aazelan Hassan said they only managed to remove the tanker at about 2pm with the help of several cranes.
“There was also some chemical leakage which took us about 20 minutes to clean up.
“Luckily, the accident happened on a Sunday and not a weekday.
“Traffic flow was not affected much as not many vehicles were using the expressway on a weekend,” he said.
