SUPP’s Dudong feud deepens

What say you on the issue below?

KUCHING: The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong branch crisis has deepened with the Sibu branch planning to form a “second” Dudong branch at its extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on Sept 19.

Veteran Dudong assemblyman Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck has objected to the EGM, saying that it was not the right forum to discuss the Dudong branch’s formation.

He argued that the Dudong branch has already been set up under his chairmanship.

Dr Soon, also state Assistant Minister for Housing, said disputes on the status of the branch should be resolved by a special delegates’ conference (SDC), which he has asked the party to convene.

He was said to have gathered enough support from party branches and members for the SDC.

Dr Soon claimed that the Registrar of Societies (ROS) has approved the formation of the Dudong branch on Sept 21, 2007.

He said party secretary-general Datuk Sim Kheng Hui had mentioned in his report tabled at last year’s general assembly of a resolution to appoint him as the Dudong branch chairman, and to set up the branch before May this year.

Dr Soon was unanimously elected as the Dudong branch chairman in April.

The Sibu branch headed by Datuk Wong Soon Koh said the Sept 19 EGM would also discuss the formation of five other new party branches in the state constituencies of Bukit Assek, Pelawan, Tamin, Nangka and Bawang Assan.

This is in line with the party’s decision in 2006 to set up new branches in all the 71 state constituencies. Six of these constituencies now come under the SUPP Sibu branch.

“The new branches must be formed in accordance with the ROS procedures. Their chairmen and leaders must be chosen in line with the party regulations and in a democratic manner,” it said in a press statement.

It said the party central working committee had delegated the Sibu branch to deal with the formation of the Dudong branch with the help of a five-man panel headed by the party’s organising secretary Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui.

The Sibu branch, which has objected to Dr Soon’s move to set up the Dudong branch without its approval two years ago, claimed that Dr Soon picked 200 new party members to form the Dudong branch although there were 3,299 registered members in the constituency.

It said all the registered members in the Dudong constituency should be given a chance to elect its leaders through democratic processes.
