SUPP to settle thorny Dudong branch issue

What say you on the issue below?

KUCHING: Twenty of the 43 Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) branches have formally submitted a joint requisition to convene a special delegates’ conference (SDC) to resolve the issue of Sibu’s controversial Dudong branch.

The 20 branches have a total of 25,986 members, representing more than 23% of the party’s total membership of 111,381.

Article 20(1)(ii) of the party constitution states that an SDC shall be convened whenever the central working committee (CWC) deems it desirable, or upon the requisition from at least two branches provided that their combined membership exceeds 20% of the party’s total.

On behalf of the 20 branches, Tanjung Datu branch chairman Pung Teng Hong handed over the documents requesting the SDC to the party’s central executive secretary Phang Dah Nan at the SUPP headquarters here yesterday.

The ceremony was witnessed by representatives of all the 20 branches. The CWC meeting today is expected to discuss the proposed SDC.

Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck, who was elected Dudong branch chairman at its inaugural general meeting on April 30, said the agenda of the SDC was to “endorse the formation of the Dudong branch together with its branch committee members’ list (also elected on April 30)”.

Soon, also state Assistant Minister for Housing, urged the SDC to reaffirm the resolution adopted at the delegates’ conference last year on the formation and operation of the Dudong branch.

The Sibu branch headed by Datuk Wong Soon Koh has objected to the formation of the Dudong branch, as Soon had initiated the Dudong branch without approval.

The Sibu branch has scheduled an extraordinary general meeting tomorrow to discuss the formation of a “second” Dudong branch and five other new branches.
