JOHOR BARU: The roadworthiness of all 5,081 express buses nationwide will be checked two weeks before any major festival, said Road Transport Department enforcement director Salim Parlan.

The checks would be conducted by RTD officers at the transport operator’s depots and workshops, he said.

“The officers will check the condition of the brakes and tyres of the express buses.

“This operation just started prior to Hari Raya this year and it will be conducted before all major celebrations from now on,” he told reporters here yesterday.

He added that the move to check the buses at the depots and workshops was designed for the convenience of passengers as well as the operators.

“Checking buses at bus terminals will delay the departure and inconvenience passengers.

“We feel that checking buses at the depots and workshops will be beneficial to all,” he said, adding that the department wanted to encourage more people to use public transport.

Salim said checks on the buses started last Sunday, and 71 express buses had been checked in Johor so far.

“Seven buses failed the inspection and have been issued warning letters. The checks will continue until all 13 operators in the state are fully checked,” he said.

Salim also said the department had identified the the KL Inter- national Airport in Sepang, the Larkin bus terminal here and the Puduraya bus terminal in Kuala Lumpur as major hotspots for touts.

“Enforcement officers – both uniformed and undercover – have been assigned to monitor these places,” he said, advising people to buy taxi and bus tickets from proper counters to prevent touts from making a profit.

He said the department had detained 21 touts from Larkin and 68 from Puduraya this year, adding that most of them have been charged in court.
