RMAF pilots die in crash during diversion practice

ALOR SETAR: Two Royal Malaysian Air Force pilots were killed when their Pilatus PC-7 crashed and burst into fire at the Langkawi International Airport.

The tragedy occurred at about 12.30pm yesterday when Mej Mohd Roszaini Mohd Mustapa, 37, and Mej Mohd Zulkifli Hasan, 38, were coming in to land at the airport.

Langkawi’s Persiaran Putera fire station chief Yaakob Hassan said he was told the plane had taken off from the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Kepala Batas here but crashed in an open area some 90m from the tarmac at the Langkawi airport.

Yaakob said that the victims were extricated from the wreckage at about 1.20pm.

Meanwhile, the RMAF said in a statement that the pilots were on a diversion practice when the incident occurred.

It said Mej Mohd Zulkifli piloted the aircraft which left the RMAF College in Kepala Batas at about 11.54am.

Mej Mohd Zulkifli, from Taiping in Perak, is survived by a wife and five children while Mej Mohd Roszaini from Kuala Krai, Kelantan, leaves behind his wife and three children.

It is learnt that the bodies of the two pilots were flown here and sent to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital mortuary.
