FOR Malaysians who miss traditional home-cooked food, the Ramadan bazaar held at the banquet hall of the Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations is certainly an event to look forward to each year.
Thus, when the Ladies Association of the Permanent Mission of Malaysia donned their aprons and whipped up an array of culinary delights recently, scores of Malaysians living in the city’s five boroughs and as far as New Jersey made a beeline to the mission’s premises in midtown Manhattan.
Association president Datin Amy Hamidon said the bazaar was first introduced in 2007 and had become an annual feature due to overwhelming response from both Malaysians and other nationalities.
Wide array: Guests at the Ramadan fair in New York The bazaar, held during the fasting month, was also to showcase the country’s cultural diversity to the international community, she added.
E-mails were sent out a week earlier to announce the fair and those who turned up on Saturday were not disappointed.
There were over 10 stalls selling a vast array of mouth-watering Malaysian food such as Nasi Lemak, Mee Kuah, Laksa Johor, Assam Laksa, Nasi Dagang, Nasi Ulam, Nasi Ayam, Satay, Mee Goreng, Char Kueh Teow, Mee Hoon Goreng, Karipap, Pulut Panggang and Roti Jala.
The brisk sales during the three-and-a-half hour fair was testimony to the tasty food served. Tables were set for non-Muslim guests to enjoy their meal while the Muslims waited to break fast.
Among those spotted at the fair was Malaysian model Ling Tan, who turned up with a group of friends, including non-Malaysians.
A regular: Cheng has not missed the Ramadan fair since it started. Tan said they ordered numerous dishes so that everyone could get to sample the wide range of food.
She gave the thumbs up for the Karipap and was seen buying more to take home.
Malaysian entrepreneur Niki Cheng, who owns a chain of furniture stores in New York and New Jersey, said she had not missed a single fair since it started.
A group of students, back from Malaysia after their summer break, also took the opportunity to enjoy their favourite dishes before heading back to their colleges and universities.
Last Monday, the mission also held a Merdeka Day celebration at its premises and treated guests to a sumptuous spread of Malaysian food.
The event, hosted by Malaysia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Datuk Hamidon Ali, attracted hundreds of people, including foreign dignitaries and UN officials.
Also present to welcome the guests was Malaysian consul-general Mohd Zamruni Khalid.
