Public still ignorant about road safety

What say you on the issue below?

A Road Safety quiz held in Putrajaya recently proved that many Malaysians are still ignorant about road signs and rules.

The quiz was held on Sept 13 and 14 in conjunction with the “Balik Kampung” campaign to test the public’s knowledge on road signs and traffic rules.

According to the results, 41.5% of the participants have only 75% understanding of the road signs, while 3.8% need extra classes to coach them to drive safely. It also showed that 78% are still confused about the road signs.

At a press conference during the campaign, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said that statistics showed that Malaysia had the highest rate of road accidents, especially during festivities.

“The awareness on road safety is still low. Therefore, such campaigns will raise awareness and instil positive values in order to reduce the number of accidents.

“There’s an immediate impact as the number of road accidents have decreased following such campaigns.

“Such road safety campaigns should be carried out even during non-festive periods,” he said.

He reminded the Putrajaya community to take the necessary precautions to ensure that their house and valuables are safe during their absence from home by informing the nearby police before they return to their hometown.

“It is also important to plan your journey, adhere to the speed limit, follow the rules and buckle up,” he advised.

Also present were Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) president Tan Sri Samsuddin Osman and city services director Datuk Abdul Ghani Ahmad, and Federal Territories secretary-general Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib.

During the campaign, 100 helmets were distributed to motorcyclists in exchange for their old helmets that were not Sirim-certified.
