One solemn pledge, one exhilarating ride

What say you on the issue below?

AMAZING, exhilarating and thrilling are some of the words to describe the ride on the Join The Pact (JTP) Supercar driven by none other than double Formula 1 world champion Mika Häkkinen but IT specialist David Chin summed it up aptly as “The best ride of my life”.

Chin, 25, was one of the five lucky Malaysians who made a pledge to Never Drink and Drive under Johnnie Walker’s Join the Pact initiative and rode in the JTP Supercar with Hakkinen, at the Sepang International Cicuit (SIC) last Sunday.

“It was more than a dream come true for me as I am a big fan of F1. Signing up for the pledge is a commitment. Before this, I’d drive as long as I was half sober but now I will have a designated driver,” said Chin, who won the chance via a radio station contest.

Rewarding experience: The five winners of the Join The Pact ‘Never Drink and Drive’ campaign (from left) William Tan, Roshan Mukthi, Tee Kian Seng, Ngooi Kheng Beng and Philip Tai.

Another winner Roshan Mukthi, a 19-year-old student knows very well the consequences of drink driving, after hitting a truck.

“Six of us shared three bottles among us and I was half-drunk. My friends advised me not to drive but I did not heed their advice. I hit a truck but thankfully no one was hurt and my friends, who were driving behind me, came to help. That incident made me think twice about drinking and driving.”

Also experiencing the ride was Phillip Tai, 25, who came all the way from Johor.

He was accompanied by his father Tai Seng Kooi, a former Malaysian Superbike champion.

Other then the five lucky winners, 16 others, comprising winners from an on-site go-kart challenge, invited guests, local personalities who supported the cause, and Riche Monde employees also had the chance to experience the ride in the uniquely-designed car.

After some technical checks, the Flying Finn was ready to take the lucky winners on a spin around the circuit.

Most were rendered speechless after the overwhelming ride that lasted only mere minutes.

Riche Monde national sales manager Melinda Lee, the sole female of the day to experience the ride, was amazed by the experience.

Local personality Reshmonu described his ride with Häkkinen as “absolutely wonderful”,

“It was a combination of feelings. When you are hitting 330km, you want to be with some one like Mika. I felt safe with him. I’m very proud to be part of this campaign. You need to be in control because it affects other people,” hesaid.

TV host Henry Golding, another local personality who had pledged his support, also took part in the go-kart challenge aside from the ride in the supercar.

“It was an exhilarating and amazing experience,” he said.

According to Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chief executive officer Razlan Razali, who was one of the 21 people to experience a ride in the JTP supercar, this marks Häkkinen’s first appearance on the Sepang circuit in almost eight years.
