New effort to close price gap

What say you on the issue below?

KOTA KINABALU: A fresh effort is underway to close the gap in prices of goods between Sabah and Sara-wak, and Peninsular Malaysia.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said he had received numerous complaints from people in the two states about the higher prices of goods.

“We will be talking to the relevant parties, such as the transport industry, to see whether we can work out a formula,” Dr Koh said after attending Gerakan’s 13th Sabah delegates conference yesterday.

He said it was reasonable for Malaysians to question the higher prices of goods in Sabah and Sarawak when there were no noticeable price differences among the various regions of large countries like the United States.

Consumer groups have frequently lamented that prices of goods in Sabah and Sarawak are as much as 30% higher than those in the peninsula although the Government has introduced measures to streamline the costs of essential items.

On the frequent power blackouts due to the lack in electricity supply, Koh said the Government was aware of the situation and that various measures were being implemented.

“Things will start happening by October in stages,” Dr Koh promised.

On Gerakan, the party president said he was pleased with its growth in Sabah which had so far recruited 4,000 new members this year.

He said the party had 33 branches in the state with another 30 more in the process of being established.
