Ministry to make sure all children go to school

IPOH: The Education Ministry is going all out to ensure all children have access to education, especially those in the interior areas of Sabah and Sarawak.

Its deputy minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said strategies would be formulated to convince parents to send their children to schools.

”There are also classes for adults to instil in them the importance of education,” he said yesterday, adding that ministry records showed that there were between 80,000 and 125,000 children in the nation not attending school.

Speaking to reporters after receiving RM1.1mil in education aid from gaming company Da Ma Cai, Dr Wee said the pre-school pupils’ enrolment would be used to gauge the number of pupils who continued their studies in primary schools.

”Once they are enrolled into pre-schools, they will automatically sign up for primary schools,” he added.

Admitting that it would be a big challenge to the ministry, Dr Wee said the ministry wanted all children to have an education.

Dr Wee added that district education department officials had also been directed to go to the ground and identify children who are not going to school.

Later, when meeting Perak MCA members, Dr Wee said a new building would be built to replace the collapsed SRJK Bukit Beruang in Malacca.

He reiterated that the collapsed building was an old one that had not been used for lessons.

The number of classrooms to be built would be determined later, he added.
