KUALA LUMPUR: Crowds of last-minute shoppers are expected at shopping malls this week before the Hari Raya celebrations on Sunday, said the Malaysian Retailer Chains Association (MRCA) president Lee Hwa Cheng.

He said food and beverage, fashion, shoes and accessories outlets have seen an increasing number of shoppers since last week despite the economic slowdown and the A (H1N1) fears.

“Consumer spending sentiment is back to normal after a dip when the flu virus first started spreading in the country. Businesses were obviously slow that time,” he said in an interview after a press conference on the MRCA’s 17th anniversary celebrations here yesterday.

Lee said retailers anticipated Malaysia’s economy to start recovering in November.

Earlier at the press conference, Lee said the association would present a total of 21 awards to the country’s most outstanding retailers, in conjunction with the MRCA’s anniversary on Oct 9,

He said the MRCA had invited Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor to grace the Red Carpet MRCA 2009 Awards at Genting International Convention Centre in Genting Highlands.

“This year, we spent quite a lot money to engage Royal Selangor to specially design a pewter trophy for the winners,” he said, adding that this trophy would be the MRCA’s official award from this year onwards.

The MRCA is an association for leading retail chain store operators and franchisors in Malaysia.
