KUALA LUMPUR: Industrialist and philanthropist P. Thiagarajan has filed a RM500mil suit against Vell Paari, son of MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, for defamation.
The suit, filed at the High Court Registry here yesterday, also named Tamil Nesan Sdn Bhd and its editor-in-chief K. Pathmanabhan as defendants.
In his statement of claim, Thiagarajan said the defendants published malicious articles against him on Aug 2, 3, 4 and 7, with words which implied that he was a liar, that he was involved with lawyer and social activist P. Selvarani, and was involved in her death two years ago.
P. Selvarani was a lawyer who was attached to the firm of Messrs Kumar, Hashimah and Co, a legal firm belonging to P. Uthaya Kumar, who was detained under the Internal Security Act in December 2007 and released this year.
Thiagarajan also claimed that the articles implied that he was a murderer and a criminal, and had ruined his good name and reputation in the eyes of the public.
“The plaintiff vehemently denies these allegations made in the articles,” the statement said.
Thiagarajan is seeking an injunction to stop the defendants from saying, making or publishing any defamatory statement in Tamil Nesan or any other publication under the control of the defendants, and to retract all the previous defamatory statements.
