PETALING JAYA: The Govern-ment has assured Indonesia of the safety of its nationals here.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said Malaysia would not emulate the acts of certain irresponsible parties in the republic whose actions could hurt relations between both countries.

“I believe that the virulent protests, were carried out by groups with ulterior motives.

“Despite whatever forms of provocation made by these groups, I would like to assure Indonesia that Indonesians in Malaysia are safe,” he said after visiting Puchong, which was among 50 hotspots identified with a high street crime rate.

The latest bout of anti-Malaysian sentiment came about following accusations that Malaysia had “stolen” the Balinese Pendet dance as its own in an advertisement promoting Malaysia, broadcast over Discovery Channel.

In Serdang, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin advised Malaysian students in Indonesia to exercise caution and avoid provocation with angry anti-Malaysia demonstrators.

He said the students should avoid areas targeted by these groups in their “sweeps” for Malaysians, such as Jalan Diponegoro in Jakarta. “We have given advice, views and guidelines to our students there, and we hope they will stay safe.”
