ENTERTAINMENT: Poking fun, making us one

What say you on the issue below?

DENNIS CHUA talks to the Comedy Court duo about their latest IKind Show celebrating 1Malaysia via parody.

WITH 12 years of rib-tickling stand-up comedy behind them, zany Allan Perera and Indi Nadarajah, better known as Comedy Court, need no introduction to theatre-goers.

“Not quite ancient enough” to be called veterans apparently, they have nevertheless amassed a sizeable following after over 1,000 shows within a decade.

Allan, 48, and Indi, 50, are back on stage from Sept 24 to Oct 9 at Auditorium Tan Sri K.R. Soma in Wisma Tun Sambanthan, Kampung Attap, Kuala Lumpur.

Their all-new show, a celebration of 1Malaysia, is aptly dubbed the 1Kind Show, for it is laden with their “one-of-a-kind” interpretations of what it means to be Malaysian, warts and all.

Said Allan: “Once again, Comedy Court gives its own take on current issues that pepper everyday conversations.”
“With everybody — from companies to business associations — using the 1Malaysia concept as their platform, we too couldn’t resist the chance to jump on the bandwagon,” said Indi.

The 1Kind Show will parody a group of well-known characters in the political scene.

Said Allan: “We’ve got our by-election YBs, who are our irreverent Two Datuks with different names.

“There’s also the bar-loving lawyers Loga and Singam, who discuss issues such as the rise and fall of English in schools.”
Said Indi: “And we’ve not forgotten ‘men-a-pause’ housewives Myrtle and Thavi, who talk non-stop about recipes and traditional ways of fighting the flu. Last, but not least, the Two Chinamen KC and TC tackle global recession and female interaction via Internet networking.”
A new addition to their show is The Billionaire Show, which is a zany parody of award-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire.

Indi said besides brand new characters, a new selection of satirical music videos in tune with their past great hits such as Goodbye Sam will be featured. The new songs, all by Allan, include Under A Shady Ipoh Tree and Istana For Sale.

Allan said the 1Kind Show’s message is about “all-Malaysian humour”.
“It’s a celebration of the spirit of ‘Malaysian-ness’ at its best.”

There will also be innovations such as a new stage setting, elaborate scene changes, brand new video clips and lighting effects.

Audiences can also look forward to guest appearances on video playbacks and during performances as well.

Comedy Court regularly ties up with charities. This time, it’s doing a joint charity drive with Grace Community Services, an organisation that reaches out to orphans, unwed mothers, the elderly, the destitute and the homeless.

“We were especially moved by the centre’s Foodbank, which feeds close to 2,000 people a day. All proceeds from our shows on Oct 8 and 9 will go towards the centre, as will a portion of the proceeds from our other shows,” said Indi.

The duo developed their comedies based on fan feedback. “We’ve still got some time left to devise jokes.”
The duo’s fans are not limited to Malaysians — visitors from as far as the United States also enjoy their shows.

“We’ve done shows for Singaporeans, and we’re thinking of performing the 1Kind Show on the island republic as well.

Allan and Indi poke fun at Malaysians — from politicians to the man-in-the-street — but they don’t rely on rumours and avoid “hitting people below the belt”.

“Many VIPs still love our shows despite the cracks at them,” said Allan.

Fans who contribute RM5,000 in sponsorship will get six free VIP tickets, while those who contribute RM10,000 will get 12 tickets.

Tickets are priced at RM55, RM75, RM105 and RM103 on Oct 8 and 9. There are no shows on Sept 30 and Oct 7.
