IT was not just a gift of hearing but an enhancement in life for last year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) top scoring special student Aghilan Narayanan who recently received a pair of hearing aid.
The hearing-impaired student was fitted with a pair of Siemens Cielo 2 SP hearing aid worth RM6,200 from Siemen’s hearing aid division three months ago.
Since then, he said he could hear better
“I can now communicate with my friends better. I can hear new sound such as a car approaching when I’m on the streets. And I can continue life as a normal person,” he said.
The 18-year-old is now pursuing a degree in electrical and electronic engineering at Universiti Teknologi Petronas.
Aghilan’s father M. Narayanan said his son had been wearing hearing aid since he was six, after they discovered that he was slow in speech, which was caused by a hearing impairment.
“With the new hearing aid, it helps him to fit in at his new environment (university), especially in a lecture hall with another 150 students.
“I also noticed that his pronunciation has improved,” he said, adding that his son had scored good grades in the first semester in university.
Siemens Malaysia president and CEO Tan Sri Rainer Althoff said Aghilan’s testimony was an encouragement for them to continue helping the needy.
“This is part of our corporate social responsibility programme and the focus is on youngsters and children in need.
“We hope to help them explore the possibilities with better hearing. If you can’t hear, you can’t listen, understand or learn,” he said.
He added that while they had previously collaborated with the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur and sponsored needy students, this was the first time that they organised the CSR programme themselves and are sponsoring an individual.
According to Siemens Malaysia healthcare sector assistant country manager Michael Tan, they selected Aghilan after reading about him in The Star (No easy way to SPM success, March 13).
