PETALING JAYA: Faisal Abu Hanifah submitted about 100 entries for the Power of 9 contest and the sweet reward came in the form of the grand prize of a Perodua Myvi SE.
Faisal conducted a special prayer yesterday for the unexpected but much welcomed Ramadan surprise.
He is the Week Six winner of the contest organised by The Star.
The 39-year-old customer service consultant from Shah Alam was in the bank withdrawing money when he received the good news on Thursday.
Victory is mine: Faisal expressing his joy after winning the Perodua Myvi SE grand prize in the Power of 9 contest in Petaling Jaya Friday. “I shouted and the bank security guard looked at me as if I was mad,” said Faisal in amusement.
Owner of a five-year-old Iswara, which he has no intention of selling, Faisal said he would only use the new car for formal occasions.
For nine consecutive weeks from July 13, a brand new Perodua ViVA ELITE or Myvi SE will be given away as the grand prize, while eight other winners will receive cash prizes worth RM1,999 each.
GSC cinema vouchers worth RM80 each will also be given away to 90 winners every week.
The sixth week of the contest drew 34,210 entries.
The Power of 9 contest is organised to celebrate The Star’s birthday, which falls on Sept 9. Perodua is the official sponsor of the contest.
Those who wish to participate can do so until Sept 13 by obtaining the forms from The Star and by logging on to www.thestar.com.my/powerof9/.
One of the RM1,999 winners is Poon Thung Tat, 21, an engineering student at a local private institution. Poon plans to upgrade his laptop and treat his family and friends to a nice meal.
“I am excited as I put in a lot of effort to come up with creative signatures,” said Poon, who had submitted about 40 entries from the first week.
Another cash prize winner, Tan Yee Ling, plans to spend the money solely on entertainment.
“After receiving the news, I immediately SMSed my family members to inform them,” said the 24-year-old business graduate.
Businessman Loh Chee Heng, 54, did not stop trying after winning the RM80 cinema ticket consolation prize in the first week.
“I wanted a car so I kept on trying. Now, I have won the cash prize,” Loh said.
He said he would use the money to repair his 10-year-old Kancil.
Loh had submitted 30 entries from the first week.
He is determined to continue until he wins a car.
