Bollywood touch at fundraiser

What say you on the issue below?

THE Association of British Women Malaysia (ABWM) is no stranger to fund-raising activities and charity but its latest fundraiser is bound to leave a lasting impression on guests.

The Santa Fe Bollywood Nite tomorrow is going to be exactly like a Bollywood movie, with its own choreographer and a grand finale with guests performing to Bollywood music.

The idea for the cultural event sprang to life when the ABWM chairman Tracy Dale was introduced to Puspharani Thilaganathan (Rani), the principal director of Miss Malaysia India Global (MMIGlobal), which organises the Miss Malaysia India pageant.

Dale: The expatriate women in the organisation enjoy giving back to Malaysian society as they love the life they have here.

“We were introduced at the British High Commission and I was impressed by Rani’s efforts to turn these girls into women,” Dale said.

Dale then decided to bridge the gap between the British and Malaysian Indian cultures by helping to raise funds for the pageant.

According to Dale, the expatriate women in the organisation, who are all volunteers, enjoy giving back to the Malaysian society as they love the life they have here.

The proceeds from the event will be split equally between MMI Global for the pageant as well as its Gift Her with Life Project, and the ABWM’s fund for the charities it supports.

The Gift Her with Life Project conducts health workshops in universities and colleges as well as other personal and professional development projects.

For Rani, the pageant, which is running for the 10th year, is only a platform to raise funds to help finance the winners’ education.

“The essence of this is the scholarship we will be awarding the winner. Most of them come for the scholarship rather than just the title,” she said, referring to the scholarship which is awarded to the winner based on her needs.

“Some of them find it difficult to live in KL due to the cost of living, so we work something out for that as well,” she added.

For the Santa Fe Bollywood Nite, guests will have to wear a saree or an Indian costume to join in the fun. Those who do not have one need not fret as the organisers will loan the sarees.

There will be a North Indian buffet, teamed with Bollywood music.

However, for one hour, a choreographer will be teaching guests a dance routine which every one will perform together as the grand finale.

Choreographer S. Gunasegaran, who is famed for his Odissi and Bharatnatyam skills, revealed that the Miss Malaysia India contestants would be learning one Hindi and one Tamil song to present at the event.

Dale said 75 tickets had already been sold as of Saturday, and many sponsors had stepped in to finance the Bollywood Nite.

The event will be held at the Seri Pacific Hotel in Jalan Putra, Kuala Lumpur, from 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at RM100 for ABWM members and RM130 for non-members and can be bought at the ABWM House at 12, Jalan Menerung 3, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.
