SEREMBAN: Umno’s Bagan Pinang assemblyman Azman Mohammad Noor, who underwent a heart bypass operation in May, died from a blood disorder here yesterday afternoon.

The first-term assemblyman, 55, had been unwell for several days.

His wife Normah Zainal Abidin, 49, said Azman’s condition had worsened since Wednesday.

“He began feeling unwell after the state assembly sitting in August.

Conveying condolences: Mohamad (right) consoling Normah (centre) at the Seremban Specialist Centre yesterday, after Azman (inset) died from a blood disorder.

“His condition never improved and he was always feeling lethargic,” she said, adding that he died of blood septicemia, which is the presence of bacteria in the blood.

Normah said although she had advised her husband to seek medical treatment, he never took it seriously.

“He insisted on keeping his appointments. He said that he had plenty of work to do and could not afford to cancel meetings or not meet his constituents,” she said.

Normah said Azman only agreed to be taken to hospital when his condition deteriorated at 3.30am yesterday.

“He was running a very high fever and I insisted that he be taken to hospital,” she said, adding that she rushed him to the Seremban Specialist Centre from their home in Rasah Kemayan.

Normah said Azman, who was the Teluk Kemang Umno division vice-head, was still conscious when wheeled into the emergency section but fell unconscious while being taken to the intensive care unit.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said he was deeply saddened with the assemblyman’s death.

“He has been in the party for a long time and served very well. Umno and Barisan will miss him dearly,” he said.

Azman, who was buried at the Kg Bagan Pinang Muslim cemetery in Port Dickson, defeated PAS’ Ramli Ismail with a majority of 2,333 votes in the general election last year. He polled 6,430 votes to Ramli’s 4,097.

Bagan Pinang and Linggi are the only two state seats in the Teluk Kemang parliamentary constituency under Barisan control, with Port Dickson, Chuah and Lukut under the Opposition.
