Bi Jing scores with her balanced seesaw

KUALA LUMPUR: For Chan Bi Jing, nine, gender equality is a boy and a girl happily creating a balance on a seesaw.

Her drawing of the simple yet meaningful balanced seesaw captured the attention of her peers in Europe, who picked hers as one of the two winning drawings from the Asian region for the International Children’s Drawing Competition on Gender Equality.

The other winner is from Kazakh- stan.

Judges for the contest, held in conjunction with International Women’s Day, comprised 49 primary school pupils of the European School in Brussels.

Her drawing, captioned: “No matter if you are a girl or a boy, never give up and our dream will come true, together we will make our world a better place”, was among 25,000 entries received by the organiser.

The contest was organised by the European Commission, an executive arm of the European Union, for children aged eight to 10 worldwide. Two winners were picked from each region.

“My parents explained to me what gender equality is so I decided to draw the seesaw,” Chan said at the prize-giving ceremony at her school, SJK (C) Chung Kwok, here yesterday.

Chan, from Taman Melawati, has entered many drawing competitions, winning almost all of them.

She won a first prize in a competition when she was only six.

“I love drawing and singing. My parents encourage me to join contests like this,” said Chan, who is also a member of the school choir.

Her mother, Tan Seo Hwuei, 41, said Chan has her own way of expressing things through her drawings.

“I especially like how she expresses emotions through the faces that she draws,” said the former kindergarten art teacher.

Chan received her prize, a computer and printer, from European Commission ambassador to Malaysia and head of delegation Vincent Piket.

Women, Family and Community Development Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Faizah Tahir was also present.
