MUAR: About 100 villagers here have applied for permits from the Muar Veterinary Department to slaughter and sell beef and mutton for the Hari Raya celebration.
A department spokesman said some of them applied for two or three permits but a few planned to slaughter between six and 10 cows or goats for Hari Raya.
He said the department had no problem in approving the permits as there was ample supply of cows and goats for the coming Hari Raya celebration in the district.
“When there are many traders selling beef or mutton in the villages, the people do not need to crowd the town market to buy the items.
“And big town dwellers who balik kampung can also stop along the roadside stalls to buy meat,” he said yesterday.
Meanwhile, a roadside stall trader Faizal Mustapha said since his stall was located in the Parit Bakar town, he planned to slaughter about 15 cows.
He said besides beef, he also hoped to slaughter a few buffalos as there were demand for the meat, especially among those returning from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
“Although most of the local Malays prefer cow meat, some who live and work in other states often ask for buffalo meat,” he said at his stall yesterday.
