THE forests of Kuala Woh, Tapah, will play host to the Inter IPT Orienteering Cup 2011, an outdoor sports challenge which tests participants’ navigational skills using a map and compass.
Organised by SNR Adventure Consultant and Magnet Edge Resources, the competition to be held on Oct 29 and 30, is aimed at training the participants’ physical and mental endurance and capability.
During a press conference on the event, State Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharudin said the participants are to take part individually and compete against everyone else to gain supremacy through a ranking system.
“The purpose of the ranking system is to increase their sense of competitiveness and to maximise their performance,” he said.
The competition will have separate categories for men and women.
“It will be divided into two sessions — the Foot O Night Orienteering and Foot O Day Orienteering.
“Participants will need to travel a distance of 10km within 90 minutes in each session,” he added.
Event organising chairman Shamsuri Abdul Latif said orienteering was a tactical sport and required meticulous planning.
“It is a popular community sport in Malaysia. Perak is among the first few states to organise such a competition,” he said, adding that participation fee was RM50 per person.
Participants are required to bring a torchlight, camping equipment, cooking utensils and compass.
