THE Ipoh City Council brought early Deepavali cheer to ratepayers and its staff when the mayor presented them with a bag containing muruku at the council lobby.
Datuk Bandar Datuk Roshidi Hashim greeted them with colourful recyclable bags filled with boxes of muruku as they stepped into the council building while wishing them ‘Happy Deepavali’.
“We have prepared 300 boxes of muruku.
“We gave out Mandarin oranges during Chinese New Year, dates for Hari Raya, the Jalur Gemilang during National Day and now, muruku for Deepavali,” he said, adding that the council will be handing out cakes for Christmas.
“This is the beauty about Malaysia where we are able to celebrate various festivals despite our different religious believe and culture,” he told reporters on Tuesday.
Council valuation department chief clerk S. Arputhamalar, 58, who would be retiring soon, was elated to receive the goodies from Roshidi.
“I have been working here for the past 37 years and this is the first time I am receiving muruku from the Datuk Bandar himself.
“I am so proud that he has taken the initiative to do so,” she said.
Another staff, A. Jaya, 44, said she was surprised to hear from her other colleagues that Roshidi was giving out muruku in conjunction with Deepavali.
“This is something great. I really feel honoured,” added Jaya, a clerk with the council’s financial assets department.
Factory technician S. Mohandass, 31, said he had never expected to be greeted by the mayor when he went to the council to pay his assessment bill.
“It is a good feeling to receive something, especially from a government department,” he said.
