UPGRADING work on amenities in 20 Seberang Prai markets is almost 80% complete, said Seberang Prai Municipal Council president Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
She said the work which included replacing the roof and gutter as well as flooring, plumbing and toilet repairs, would be completed by December.
“I am pleased that the upgrading work at these markets is progressing fast and smooth.
“I hope the hawkers and traders will give us their fullest co-operation to maintain these amenities as well as the level of cleanliness in their respective markets,” she said after inspecting the upgrading work at the Chai Leng Park market in Prai on Wednesday.
Maimunah said the state government had allocated RM5mil to upgrade facilities in 20 markets in Seberang Prai to provide comfort to the traders, hawkers and shoppers.
She said the state had allocated another RM5mil to refurbish three markets — Sri Bandar Market in Butterworth, the Sama Gagah Market in Permatang Pauh and Taman Berjaya Market in Nibong Tebal.
“The refurbishment on these three markets, which includes structural revamp of the buildings, is expected to be completed by the end of next year,” she said.
Maimunah said she had asked for the council’s appointed cleaning contractors to ensure that the toilets in these markets were kept clean at all times.
“We also want to ensure that the traders pack and discard fish scales and meat entrails in proper bins and not dump them into the drains.”
Also present were municipal councillors Soon Lip Chee, Oon Neow Aun, Ahmad Farid Md Arshad and K. Visvanathan.
