Dressed in a white blouse and slacks, C.P. Lau is one of the 303 women spending nine days at the Tow Boo Keong Temple in order to observe all the rites of the Nine Emperor Gods festival this year.
The vast air-conditioned hall on one side of the temple has been converted into sleeping bunks for the women to stay for the duration of the celebration.
“I have been coming here for the festival for more than 10 years. I enjoy the spirit of camaraderie here,” said Lau, 77, from Bercham.
“At my age, I am happy to see familiar faces each time knowing that we have survived another year,” she added.
The festival, a local Taoist celebration dedicated to the nine sons of Tien Hou, the Queen of Heaven, is held for nine days from the first day of the ninth lunar month each year.
“We pray for peace for the country and good health for ourselves and our family members.
“Malaysians should be happy that we live in peace and our country is not affected by natural calamities like tsunami and earthquakes,” said Lau.
The festivals ends on Thursday.
